Living Archive Project

Plaque designs for Steveston Museum and London Heritage Farm

The objective of the Living Archive Project is to turn Steveston into an online archive space (‘Wikipedia town’) by involving the community, as well as knowledgeable volunteers in the creation and translation of online Wikipedia articles about the village, and then linking to these articles with QRpedia codes displayed at points of interest. Residents and visitors will be able to scan these mobile barcode links with their smart phones and bring up the Wikipedia pages sharing factual information and narratives about notable places, people, and artifacts.

Why Steveston?

Steveston has a rich and layered history; it is relatively small, but filled with historical significance. Its residents are enthusiastic and proud about where they live. Its Historical and Cultural Societies take great care and effort in preserving and presenting locations.

By recording our history in the public spaces we use every week and allowing everyone to be a contributor, we have the potential to both preserve the past and chronicle the present, without tucking knowledge away in an archive. With minimal risk and cost, the rich history of Steveston can be shared on a bigger scale than ever before, providing the community with a fresh understanding of what makes Steveston special.
